WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps, has finally made its way to desktop computers without requiring a phone connection. Yes, you read that right! With WhatsApp's Desktop version, you can use the app on your computer without needing your phone nearby.

When using the Desktop app in Windows 8 and Windows 10, you won't be able to enjoy Toast notifications, which display all incoming messages on your screen. However, this isn't a significant drawback since it would compromise your privacy by showing anyone looking at your screen your WhatsApp conversations.

Instead, when someone sends you a message, the Desktop app will draw a red overlay icon on its Taskbar button, indicating unread messages. This is similar to how Skype for Desktop handles notifications.

One notable limitation of the Desktop version is that it doesn't support voice calls yet. However, it does offer seamless communication with your WhatsApp contacts.

During my brief test run in Windows 7, I found the app to be perfectly usable and easy to navigate. To get started, you'll need to keep mobile WhatsApp running on your phone, just like the Web version.

Here's how it works: open WhatsApp on your phone and select 'WhatsApp Web' from the menu (accessed by pressing the three-dot button). Then, scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen using your phone's camera. After a few seconds, WhatsApp's shortcut will appear directly on your Desktop and in the Start Menu.

To install the app, simply double-click the shortcut to run it. You can also download the installer for Windows 10 and Windows 8 from this page. Interestingly, the current installer doesn't check the operating system version, so you can even use it in Windows 7.
